This is a sequel of the original, National Treasure, which was released in 2004. Both films were directed by Hollywood favorite, Jon Turtletaub. Sometimes sequels can be disappointing; not this one! Viewers and critics alike agree ?Book of Secrets? is every bit as entertaining as the original; some think it is even better!
Ben Gates, played by Oscar-winner Nicholas Cage (who reprises the role) finds himself traversing the world in search of the ?Lost City of Gold?. Gates is a true treasure-hunter and is up to the task. Clues are reveled to Ben little by little until he reaches the final clue. The final clue, however, comes with mighty big strings attached ? before the final clue will be revealed, Ben must first kidnap a prominent Washington D.C. figure. The decision he makes about the kidnapping proves to be life-altering for Gates.
It would be difficult to find a stronger cast of actors. All three lead roles are played by Best Actor/Actress Oscar-winners. The protagonist, Ben Gates, is played by the fabulous Nicholas Cage (Cage won his Oscar for his work in Leaving Las Vegas). Jon Voight plays Patrick Gates, Ben?s father. Voight earned his Oscar for his portrayal of a Vietnam vet in the film ?Coming Home?. Rounding out the top three is Dame Helen Mirren (whose Oscar was earned for her performance in ?Queen? in 2007).
Jon Voight, who won Best Actor for is portrayal of a Vietnam vet in the film ?Coming Home? shines as Patrick Gates, Ben?s dad. Voight is superb as he plays the high-spirited, whimsical Gates. Patrick loves adventure every bit as much as his son does and together they have a really great time. The chemistry between the two actors is undeniable.
Other actors include the very talented Harvey Keitel (perhaps best known for his role in Taxi Driver), who portrays a smart-mouthed Agent Sadusky and he does so very well. A relative newcomer, lovely Diane Kruger plays the role of Abigail Chase. A fellow treasure-hunter, and Ben?s girlfriend, Abigail is delighted to take part in the caper.
The final clue, however, will not be revealed until Ben kidnaps an important American politician. Ben is aided and accompanied by love interest, Abigail Chase, played well by relative newcomer, Diane Kruger. Ben, Patrick, Emily and Abigail take viewers on a once in a lifetime ride full of surprising twists and turns. It would be virtually impossible to be bored watching this movie.
